Greetings Colleagues!
Frances Shuster, PCC President, Coaching For Results, Inc.
Many of our Coaching For Results, Inc. members are attending the annual global ICF conference in Orlando, Florida this December. The theme for this year's conference is Global Conversations: Inspiring individuals, Building communities, Impacting the world. This conference offers us the opportunity to connect with coaches from over 40 countries, exchange ideas and explore possibilities for our own development as professional coaches and discover new ways to impact the individuals we reach through our work. In fact, several of us conversed with Graham Hoult, our first webinar guest, at a past ICF conference during lunch, where we were seated in an education special interest group. I am going to the conference with an open, eager mind and look forward to sharing insights with you.
Warmly,
Frances Shuster, PCC
President, Coaching For Results, Inc.

The Phenomenon of Coaching
By Kathy Kee
Recently, Coaching School Results held a webinar that focused on the Phenomenon of Coaching; the powerful path that the professional field of coaching travels to influence results and excellence in organizations around our globe. Professional coaches Graham Hoult of Australia and Kathy Kee of the United States provided an overview of the history of coaching and the impact coaching is having around the world.
Coaching is probably as old as the first Stone Age spear-throwing competition, but only in the last ten years or so has the professional field of coaching-for-purchase, outside of sports and the performance arena, been available. The following timeline sequences the growth.
- 1950's - Coaching appears in schools and sports models for improved performance.
- 1960's - Business adopts a one-to-one approach for employee development.
- 1970's - Training and education theories begin to impact business coaching.
- 1980's - Coaching emerges as a popular profession for personal development and people management.
- 1990's - Coach training schools proliferate and the International Coach Federation (ICF) is established as a worldwide association. Certification adds standards and requirements to the field.
- 2000's - The coaching profession becomes the fastest growing worldwide training and development industry surpassing $100 billion in income.
Coaching has changed from support for poor performers to today's focus on the high level performers and the top talent leading organizations and companies. Coaching recognizes that the person receiving coaching already has the vast majority of answers and solutions and the role of the coach is to support the unlocking and achievement of the true potential within.
In a recent Price-Waterhouse Global Coaching Study of 2,100 coaching clients from 64 countries, the following results were identified:
- 80 percent of individuals have experienced a positive change in self-esteem /self-confidence as a result of partnering with a professional coach.
- Companies that use or have used professional coaching for business reasons have seen a median return on investment of 700 percent, or seven times their initial investment.
- 83 percent of coaching clients reported being "very satisfied" with their coaching experience.
- 96 percent of coaching clients indicated they would repeat the coaching process, given the same circumstances.
In a 2007 research study into high-impact talent management in organizations, 700 corporations were surveyed and 55 top executives were interviewed. The question asked what functions and processes are used to best drive results.
62 processes were identified
22 consistently drive impact
The top "22" actions were identified
The #1 FOCUS was on COACHING because it was found that coaching structures develop high levels of engagement, leadership, flexibility, and performance.
Another study done at Harvard by Eva Wong, demonstrated that coaching sustains and supports during periods of implementation and essentially avoids or eliminates the known "implementation dip." During a time in history when so much knowledge and change is faced by workers in every field of work, coaching is rising to the forefront as the process to support, excel and accelerate through the change required.
Coaching exemplifies the field of Positive Psychology as:
- Coaches operate from a positive mindset.
- Coaches must believe in self, the client, and the process.
- Coaches remind clients of, and connect them to, their capacity and potential.
- Coaching is about moving forward, providing options, and identifying action steps.
- Coaching brings positivity, potential, and possibility to clients.
Coaching has dramatically impacted the field of education with the potential of reconnecting schools to the positive belief in the potential of all students and educators.
The Phenomenon is worldwide... the impact is global... the potential for change is limitless!
